Building on the “lessons learned” from the survey of international examples and the analysis of existing Metro facilities, the design team prepared a concept design for future Metro stations. The basic program requirements were to develop an integrated design whose common components could be applicable and appropriate for future light rail transit stations and major above-grade components for below-grade stations.
An explicit goal of the design team was to unify, and simplify, the visual “brand” of the MTA rail system by way of providing a consistency, and reliability, in the employment of design elements for future stations. The team’s focus was in the five following areas: Architecture, Identity and Wayfinding, Site and Connectivity, Materials and Maintenance, and Design Process. Finally, the design team believed that the future transit system should resonate with values that are distinctly characteristic of Southern California. While our cultural communities are diverse, the physical environment that we all share in common is one of light and air, an abundance of natural materials, and a focus on health, well-being and a kind of optimism.
